Dotsub.com

May 29, 2007

I have to admit I was at first a bit underwhelmed with the buzzword Web 2.0 and it’s associated visual manifestations, you know the ones rounded corners, gradients, diagonal stripes, all presented on the decoratively sanitised and highly reflective glass table. But every now and then, someone comes up with a really good idea that utilises the internet community to provide a valuable service to that community. dotsub is a community translation service to translate any video online and I reckon it’s pretty sick. take a look and see for yourself.

A Lost Theory from Amnesia - Pandora’s Box

May 25, 2007

There are two shows most of us at Amnesia watch religiously - Heroes and Lost. Whilst there are many theories for Lost, I thought I’d post the Pandora’s Box theory I’ve had since the end of season one having. [ no spoilers ]

Here’s the story on Pandora:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandora

Here’s my theory in short: The Island is Pandora’s Box. In fact the whole story is a modern day retelling of the myth and it will follow the plot - releasing everything on the island into the world when opened, ultimately to finish with ‘Hope’ - the last thing in the box.

Clues from the dialogue:
Season 1: Jack says to Locke on the way to the black rock ‘what do you think is in the hatch?’ Locke replies “Hope.”
Season 3: Ben says to Locke. What if I told you there was a box on this island, and when you opened that box…”

So we end season 3 …the overall storyline is still on track to support the Pandora’s Box theory. Let’s wait and see..

Easy concept to make the world a better place

May 24, 2007
I think they should do it everywhere but New York is probably a good starting point with their 13000 cabs.
clipped from www.ecogeek.org

Mayor Micheal Bloomberg is about to announce that every Taxi in New York City will be a hybrid in a mere five years.

NY taxi regs require cars to be replaced every 3 years for fleet cars and every 5 years for driver-owned cars. They’re removing non-hybrids from the ‘approved’ list so that, when replacement time comes, only hybrids can be purchased.

A stunning next gen monitor from Dell

May 19, 2007
No need for a description here - just look at he pic. The amazing fact is that this monitor (due out this year sometime) is only 0.5 inches thick (1.3 cm) thick. Careful - it might blow away if you sneeze…

Dell to keep the panel depth to a crazy thin 0.5-inches. Although DisplayPort is said to support a resolution 4x that of today’s HDTV resolutions, the panel on this pup was only pumping an estimated 1920 x 1200 when we saw it.

Hubble replacement finally unveiled by NASA.

May 11, 2007

Hubble - now 17 years old has a successor due to be launched in 2013 - The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

We can’t quite work out how much more powerful than the Hobble it will be but here’s a quote from Nasa: “Clearly we need a much bigger telescope to go back much further in time to see the very birth of the universe,” said Edward Weiler, director of Nasa’s Goddard Space Flight Centre.

Ze Frank at TED: What’s so funny about the Web?

May 2, 2007

http://www.ted.com/talks/view/id/87

Ze Frank giving an entertaining talk at TED, a conference in Monterey, California with an amazing collection of speakers. From the site:

Performer, web-toymaker and philosopher-comic Ze Frank offers his signature blend of comedy, technology and social theory, with hilaious takes on Google, video games, and haiku, to name but a few. All the while, he makes brilliant use of the screen to twist the meaning of his spoken words.

Other speakers include Al Gore, Bono, Chris Anderson, Jeff Bezos and many, many more.

Desperate Internet search for a missing sister

A desperate plea across the internet has made the front page of Digg today. We are posting this here in the vein hope that the viral effect will reach someone somewhere who can help.

My Sister, Nicole Vienneau, Has Gone Missing in Syria
[April 29th UPDATE: There is still no word, but we suspect she never made it out of Syria. The RCMP (Canada’s police force) have involved Interpol (the nearest “local” police) and the FBI (to access her email records). Canada does have diplomatic relations with Syria, and we’re pretty certain she’s not in a Syrian prison. She made no bank transactions after we last heard from her. It’s not looking good.
