Montauk Monster Pictures. The story explained…

Below are all the photos of the ‘Montauk Monster’. Always interesting to see a story spread like wildfire on the net. It contains all the classic ingredients of common ‘fact or fiction’ viral story. Let’s take a closer look at the Montauk Monster images, the facts, and the story behind the creation of a new legend.

image
The ‘Discoverers of the Montauk Monster’ being interviewed.

A second set of photos from another eyewitness:
image
Is this a velociroflcoptersaurus?

image
The earlier photos above taken by a different source (Christina Pampalone) confirms that there was little doubt of the validity of there being a carcass… but clearly it’s more doglike at this point… and yes, no beak!

image
Back to the other angle from the “beak photo set”, released in a video interview today.

So from a marketing perspective here’s the breakdown of why I believe this story has traveled so easily and captured our imagination.

The secrets of urban legend creation:
1. Monster! Yes we all want to believe really. The unknown, the possibility of fiction becoming fact is a pull for most of us and a break from the daily drudge of the same old news.
2. Believability – The photo is enticing enough for anyone, including experts to take a second look. Found by the sea which we know holds many secrets makes it even more enticing.
3. Credibility. Found by three women, apparently normal everyday people with little to gain from a hoax although they have stashed the carcass… I’m sure this will be worth a buck now the story is so big!
4. No instant debunk. If a story is put to bed quickly by credible sources/multiple experts then interest is usually lost quickly. In this case we’ve heard little to counter the story which gives reason to believe and thus amplification continues. Interviews conveniently suggest that scientists (urrr… which scientists are those please?) have already agreed it’s a not a recognised species – and that’s enough for most to take it as fact.
4. Lack of information. The less we know, the more we crave. The less we find, the more we look, the more we ask, the more we spread the story.
5. Ego complex: We are the experts …Yes it’s a chance to tell the world via your comments and friends that you knew it was real, or a complete hoax. Hey, aren’t we great for figuring it out first. We call this the competitive-ego complex in here (when talking about viral memes).
6. It’s not the end of the story. Yes the carcass has been stored away (you’d think they’d put it on ice) but apparently it’s decaying away in a friends backyard waiting for the men in black to arrive.
7. Mainstream media amplification: Once the story makes TV and press we crave additional information. Just  as with the Corey Worthington story a few months back, the web is just a click away for more info after the national news. Off we head to Google…
8. Story Availability. You and others found this page through Google and there will be thousands of other sites that will spawn and index this monster very highly. Yes, finding This monster is easy!

image
Didn’t we do well! Breaking story site Gawker’s traffic took a welcome boost from the monster’s arrival…

Destined for urban legend status: So is it a new species, monster, alien life form? One things for sure, if it is proved not to be one of the above, this story will simply join conspiracy theory sites and the thousands of other stories on urban legend site Snopes, ready to resurface a dozen times over the next few years.

It does not look like a marketing hoax from where we stand but there is no reason to believe too much until the final facts unfold. Most likely this is just a lot of hype over something we simply can’t see properly.

Not the first time we went crazy over a sea monster carcass:
image
This famous catch (here) in 1997 re-ignited our imagination in sea monsters in the similar way when caught by a Japanese fishing boat. It was so amazing …they decided to throw the carcass back into the ocean, not even keeping a single bone. Hmmm.

image
But the myth was so popular and widely lauded, it even got it’s own stamp.

Marketing lessons from sea monsters:
Virally, there are many lessons to be learned from the spread of urban myths and tall tales that can be applied to social media marketing. It doesn’t mean you need to set out to fool people or become friends with ET, but we (the consumer) will generally respond to key elements from the above stories if distributed with just enough (but not too much) information to make us think twice about what we’re looking at.

  1. JimW says:

It’s obviously a rotting dog. It just looks like a beak because it’s half buried in the sand.

    • Deviljho says:

This is obveously a dog as eveyone is saying. I have multiple freinds with the coast guard patrolling that area. They say that there are always dead animals in the water. The salt makes them bloat and certain other chemicles in the water cause hair loss. The famous beak photo is simply an illusion. It is not a turtle without a shell that came from plum island mutated. It is not advretisment for any new shows and it is certainly not a racoon like whatsisface said on animal planet. It is much to large to be a racoon and has a toataldifferent skeletal structure than a turtle. That rests my case of it being a dog and I think its a pretty good one.

  2. SarahParsons says:

It can’t be a sea creature – it has dog balls! I agree with the article – people so want to believe they will see what they want to see.

  3. Dan says:

Who knows what that is?! Maybe a wolf? Watch the Montauk Monster videos at LeakedTV(dot)com/MontaukMonster/

  4. Dema says:

am sure 100% it is a dog !!

  5. Donna says:

It’s obviously a bloated dog carcass thats been in the water for some amount of time, which explains the fur, teeth and claws. Also there is no beak, it’s just the snout has shed off the skull. From a front veiw you can clearly see the nasal cavity, which to me looks like a dog’s.

  6. VINNY says:

LOOKS LIKE A PIT BULL TERRIER GOT THE BAD END OF SOMETHING OR SOMEONE.

  7. Dr. Barnes says:

This is a deceased canine. Based upon what remains (i.e. skull geometry, ears, muscle definition, & overall body structure), most likely a pit bull.

    Best Regards,

    Dr. Barnes, DMD

  8. kay says:

it looks like a koala bear with large scary teeth.

  9. Rachel says:

I for one think it is a mutated dog that is rotting, and was in the water for quite some time. But i think the reason it is IN the water is because it was an illegal experiment and the evidence had to be rid of. My cousin Andrew says it is a mutation between a dog and a boar. I still thinks it is a mutated dog, because it’s body is all messed up and it’s jaw is totally out of wack. It’s still a monster, though!

  10. Austin says:

this can’t be a dog because if it was floating around in the middle of the ocean..wouldn’t you think something would eat it? it has to be some kind of sea dweller

  11. Austin says:

also how do you explain the beak? the pictures clearly show a broken beak where the nose should be. However i do have to agree that it does look like some sort of mutated pig…but not mutated with a dog

  12. sam says:

they are a few fundamental problems with these pics. firstly the coloration i could understand if the sun cooked one side of the flesh and then they turned it over but didn’t the people say they found it in the morning……that would mean that thing thing sat out the whole day before without anyone noticing this festering corpse…… also if you notice there are no foot marks or drag marks by the blue corpse and if they were to have turned the body over for a better view wouldn’t there be any signs of people moving it. then take a look at the brown version of the body the face is buried in the sand making it look like it has a beak and singular fang i can understand if the body was washed up everyone who has been to the beach knows the sand erodes very easily and things sink how ever in the pics with the blue body the feet are buried and the face is completely out of the sand….. also look around both bodies there is none of the typical water erosion lines from when the ocean water runs around something and buries it slightly in the sand. as much as i would like to believe it’s an alien or some kind of new species i think it’s just a big hoax done by a bunch of kids who want attention, also seeing as how there is no body to speak of anymore and there is no investigation being done to find the cause or origin of the “monster”. i say cu dose to these kids for getting some much attention but next time try doing something productive for the attention.

  13. Austin says:

all that may be true and even if it is real you’d have to think who in their right mind would want to get anywhere near that thing. That probably explains there not being any feet prints.
and i have to agree the sand doesnt look anywhere near wet, nor is it as white as it should be. It looks more to me to be desert sand. If this thing really is real and not some news media crap then id like to see this thing myself. But i don’t think that a bunch of people have a top secret lab somewhere off the coast because i’m sure the coast guard would have been suspicious seeing the same people go to the same place every single day. Those people would have to live there in order to keep it secret. Looking at the blue corpse, you can see around the mouth it looks like its been torn all to peices, but with the brown corpse, it looks somewhat in tact. Honestly i think its a wild boar that someone found in the desert and they claim it to be from the beach and i think that the “beak” is just a broken tusk. The sand has rocks in it. so how could that be a beach. Also with the blue corpse theres no residue on the face from where the people flipped it over. And i’m pretty sure they didnt was the thing off just to get a picture of it.

  14. bluegrl says:

Yeah, I’m not sure about this monster–looks like some kind of low budget horror film thing, but no one believed in the giant squid either until they found one washed up on shore.
It’s always nice to think that there might be things out there that we can’t explain, however.

  15. Blackbird says:

I dont know what all the who ha is about this crap, if you look at the pictures before the carcass decomposed so much you will see it looks just like a pig or a big boar. Wake up people there are no sea monsters!!!

  16. raincoaster says:

Thanks for the closeups: I didn’t need to keep dinner down anyway.

The fur should put to rest the vole theory.

  23. Jean says:

Could it possibly be a pig?

  24. Javonne says:

People that is not a dog. There is a animal testing lab close by. Let’s face the truth. The government is cloning animals. Look the body of this strange creature. It has feet, beak, and other features. I would say this is a govt experience gone bad!

    • Black Rain says:

Yes, im preety sure there was an animal testing site near-by but if you actually look closely, it DOESN’T have a beak. You can see the skin hanging off of it and where the skin is ripped away at the beginning of the so-called “Beak”. It is obviously just its snout, but the skin has ripped and rotted away. Ever seen a Cow skull? yeah, it looks exactly the same.

  25. Eadwig says:

George Bush killed the Montauk Monster with his global warming. He got permission from the RNC because they are anti- alien immigrants.

  26. Melissa says:

I sat back and , heard everyone’s stories and , I must say people do have very good stories to what this creature is , but being catholic and , I have the gift of warning it tells me one thing for sure it can only be a demond scarry but very true . Look at our world today rummors of wars , bad things are comming to play , and Jesus said that one day Luficer will be unleashed , but I do believe that it comming to be satan has demons comming from the sea one was seen by a person in Michigan , and they are all over . What do they want ? To warn people that Evil is spreading the Earth . I know before hand some non belivers will say that I , am crazy but this does not bother me . I have seen the picture on T.V. the web , and evil poors from it ? My question is why are they dying ? This is something that worries me .
Time will have to sort out so I can see more or maybe in my dreams . One thing is for sure past beaneath the sea lies evil that no one should try to fool with no telling what would happen to us leave well along . The end is near but we have a lot of things that have to pass , but we will see things to come that will terify us to our souls .
It will not get better only worst so we must pray and trust in our Lord everyday and every night and not let our guards down .
Some may laugh but , when Noha took his family onto the Ark the peoplelaughed at them , and they did not live . I like to stand back and listen and see the whole picture before I say anything .
The Montauk Monster people call is Ocubas one of many Demonds .They are leaving the sea and roaming the earth at night so becareful . The one in Michigan was sited alive the length of a lion no hair walks close to the ground and the skin was blue very ugly and was seen just before dusk and this was in the country . They are appearing and showing themselves , but my puzzle is why are they dying there is a reason and , I plan to figure it out . We all know it feeds off blood , nothing else . Grown men are afraid of there cows and other animals . Look at this demons forearms , skin , feet al most human like , but people can dream up whatever they like , but I know what this is . May God Help us though this times of whats to come . Amen

You are not crazy. Just hopelessly brainwashed by your parents and the church (aka religion in general). Demons? Lucifer? Yes the earth is inhabited by evil. And guess what? All the praying in the world isn’t going to solve anything. You probably are past the point of rational thinking and incapable of understanding this – Stop praying and start thinking.

If your going to tell the world that evil is running rampart through the world try checking your bible for spelling(I’m sure it’s close). Demons may be real, but I’m pretty sure Demonds aren’t in the bible. You’d be a lot more convincing if you could spell. Besides if you can’t tell that is a pig, then you need to get out of your house more.

IT’S HUMAN NATURE I GUESS… AS IS ASSUMING WE KNOW EVERYTHING THERE IS TO BE KNOWN. JUST BECAUSE SOMETHING LOOKS UNNATURAL DOESN’T MEAN IT’S FROM ANOTHER WORLD OR A RESULT OF SOME KIND OF MUTATION OR EXPERIMENT. IT’S A DECAYING CARCASS BLOATED FROM TIME IN THE SEA. IT IS PROBABLY A DOG, THERE IS NO F_CKING BEAK, THAT IS THE THE TIP OF THE UPPER JAW, MISSING TEETH. I MEAN, YOU CAN F_CKING SEE THE NASAL CAVITIES, AND EMPTY SOCKETS WHERE THE UPPER TEETH WERE ORIGINALLY. IT’S BLUE BECAUSE IT’S DEAD!! THE HAIR IS IN PATCHES BECAUSE… SURPRISE!! IT’S DEAD AND WAS IN THE WATER!!! GET A LIFE PEOPLE!!! IF YOU ALL TRULY WANT TO BE DR. KNOWLEDGE ON ALL THINGS DEAD, TURN TO TAXIDERMY OR BECOME MORTICIANS, BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY, NONE OF YOU KNOW SH!T. 29. Argos235 says:

It is obvious to me that this “monster” is a slightly decomposed male pitbull dog. There are small patches that show it’s fur and it’s skin shows the coloration patterns. As for the “beak”, there is no “beak”. What is seen is the nasal cavity. If the fleshy part of the nose was still there then anyone could probably identify this animal.

  31. DJ cLiFf says:

Well, it’s a dog. It’s not the bringer of Apocalypse. It doesn’t have a beak. It’s not a demon because they aren’t living creatures that die and if it WAS, we would know by now dips***. Government experiement? — Come on, like they would have to dispose of a body in the ocean like the mafia, have you heard of a “Meat Grinder” or “Incinerator”? Stupid… That’s about all there is to it. That is what was meant by the prophecies, the world filling up with stupid people “demons” and destroying society from it’s roots up. Grow up, quit blaming everyone else, take some responsibility, and learn how just to keep it to yourself and keep your mouth shut, so we can save our planet. DJC out

Looking at that carcass it looks like a dog to me that was in the sea for a long time or something like that.

  40. Jack says:

It is a dog for a fact, the top teeth are missing, and the front of the top skull is sticking out, because the nose probably rotted off or was taken off when the top teeth were damaged. Now for it being in the ocean, it could have been thrown in in or fell off a boat. I live in the florida keys and we see things like this alot from cats or dogs falling off a boat and drownding, and no the sharks do not eat them.

  41. Dr. Joshua Harstock says:

As a doctor of Medicine at the University of Toledo,it seems painfully obvious to me that this is clearly a decomposed, bloated dog(probably a large terrier),there are certain to be new species discovered quite often in our future, unfortunately this AINT one of them!

  46. S says:

It’s obviously a Bull Terrier. Based on the shape of the head and the teeth. Just look at a Bull Terrier picture and compare them keeping in mind that this is decomposing and has been in water for who knows how long. Decomposition especially in water can really change the look of something. This whole hype is pathetic.

    AGHHHH!!! ITS THE CLOVERFIELD MONSTER!!

  51. david says:

I think it is a results of some lab trying to clone so they dumped the carcass in the ocean after a failed attempt. It was an attempt to clone an ultimate house pet. Half dog…half canary…it can protect you… snuggle to keep you warm….will eat like a bird and sing you to sleep….but watch out for the bite…

  52. James J says:

ok, i born and raised on the east end, i am now a 33 yr old man. all those stories you hear about Brookhaven labs and plum island from back in the day are more than likely true. not all of them, but some. these stories HAD to originate from some true event. And as for this “monster”, there are many things my friends and i have found that were either wierd or “not right” that washed up on the beaches of the LI sound. if it turns out to be a dog ok, if it turns out to be an animal that was tested on, ok, but the fct still remains they ARE testing on animals and it may just be a genetic hybrid of animals. but hey thats our gov’t for you. my 2 cents.

  53. Robb says:

Seems like a great concept for a new game show
“Name That Bloated Corpse” where we take animals we all know and love, slightly disfigure them and throw them into the ocean… coming to a beach near you!

    My guess is:

    Pit Bull Terrier

  54. Paul Fogel says:

Looks very much like a dog that has been in the water a while….I agree.
Sea Turtle does not have Canine teeth or the kind of musculature present . Now if it was 25 feet long and weighed 500 pounds I might change my mind.

  55. vannie says:

    Its a boar!!!

  56. Scott H says:

I find it difficult to believe that any medical doctor (MD, DMD) could make a valid, educated claim as to what species this animal is. Especially one who uses the word ‘aint’ in his posts. I’d like to see what a DVM has to say, since they deal primarily with animals.

I however, am not a DVM, but come from a family of them. While I agree that it does have many canine-like characteristics, due to my job and career path Ive seen my share of skinless large rodents and canines, and this, to my wondering eyes, appears to be the caracass of a bloated tasmainian devil or other medium to large rodent. Im fairly certain this isn’t a dog, much less a pitbull or terrier.

I also dont see how anyone can claim they know ‘for a fact’ that the carcass is anything canine. Pictures are misleading, and I would think that any guesses as to its genus and species is purely speculation (and before you get your knickers in a twist, see previous paragraph where I speculate as to its origin and species.) But I suppose, according to 80%+ of the posts here, the only animals on earth are, pigs, dogs, or goverment/genetically engineered/hairspray lab animals. Oh, and rats. So, before you judge, think a moment on how many animals there are that walk on 4 legs, have fur, and sharp teeth.

Oh, and dont get me started on the religous poster up there with no dictionary. I cant believe people read and responded to that tripe. Not that religous stuff = tripe, but the grammer, syntax and spelling for gods sake! I mean, really?

Ok, about the pic of the sea monster found by the Japanese fishing boat, the reason they diddnt keep it because they had a small ship, the thing weighed a ton, in order to keep the carcass they would have had to throw out all thier fish, it was probably a stupid captains idea to throw the thing out, they had no idea what a huge discovery had been made. Second, 1997 wasnt a great year for Photo Shopping.

Okay. It is a dead dog. It has to have been in the water for some time. The heat combined with the water with give it a gray pallor and eat away at the flesh. It also seems plausible that fish have gotten to it by the way the flesh looks torn in certain areas. More than likely it was a pit bull that someone probably killed due to the bad reputation they have received.
