In 2008, the Australian Labor Party introduced a policy of mandatory Internet filtering for all Australians. While the policy has not yet come into force, it has generated substantial opposition, with only a few groups in support. The Labor Party does not have enough votes in the Senate to enact any legislation to support the filter, so that the filter has "effectively been scuttled" unless the government is able to implement the filter by other means.

Get Up – Action for Australia, an independent organisation giving everyday Australians opportunities to get involved and hold politicians accountable on important issues, have come up with their own ad that they want to put on TV to address the issue.

I personally am against Internet censorship and according to multiple surveys I am not the only one. To protect our children, we as parents should take the responsibility and not our ISPs or the government.


New domain to be web’s phone book

Companies are now able to purchase domains atop the .tel Top Level Domain, which it’s hoped will become the new “online telephone directory”.

Called .tel, the domain is intended to act as a universal contact point rather than as a hook on which to hang websites.

Owners of .tel domains will be encouraged to populate it with details about how they can be contacted.

BigPond connects to customers with Twitter

Telstra BigPond recently launched its new “support channel” to find and assist BigPond customers through the popular micro-blogging application, Twitter.

The BigPond email support team is watching for conversations about its services, jumping in to assist when necessary.

Since launching nearly a month ago, Telstra’s approach has been widely criticised for being too “robotic” and it appears the criticism has been noted, with a noticable change in tone of the @BigPondTeam in the following weeks.

Though not the first aussie Telco to jump onto Twitter – Internode have been publishing news items since May – they’re the first to be directly interacting with customers. Not surprisingly, Internode have started to directly communicate in the last week. iiNet have also come to the party, but with very few updates.

Optus, interestingly, don’t appear to be interesting in Twitter. @Optus has no updates and is probably  just acting as a placeholder.

BigPond are probably taking a leaf from Comcast’s book, here. Six months ago when TechCrunch’s Mike Arrington was having trouble with his broadband connection he tweeted this (warning: NSFW language) but, Comcast were watching.
