A few weeks ago, it was announced that Palo Alto-based startup, Better Place, had secured a deal to outfit California’s Bay Area with a $1 Billion network of charging and exchange stations by 2012.
Teaming up with New Deal Design — who’ll be in charge of the aesthetic side of things — they’ll be installing 250,000 charging posts (above) and convenient exchange stations for drivers to switch out the 300-400lb. batteries while travelling on long journeys, without having to stop for a five-hour charging session.
Renault/Nissan are also on board, having designed two vehicles so far planned to utilize this system. Australia, Israel and Denmark are also on the company’s development schedule, with Electric Recharge Grids and compatible cars slated for release between 2011 and 2012.
