UPDATE: An historic moment in branding?
As a result of the twitter experiment below Coke said HELLO to Pepsi via Twitter (and started following them too). [Update] Pepsi responds in kind. All within 18 hours.

Pepsi replies:
http://twitter.com/pepsi/statuses/2423584043
Pepsi Canada joins in:
http://twitter.com/PepsiCanada/statuses/2423730800
And just like that, the world feels like a slightly better place.
Ahh maybe Twitter really is more than just “what I ate for breakfast.”
Thank you Coke and Pepsi for being good sports 🙂
What happened:
– We started the experiment at about 9.42am July 1 in Twitter (Original Tweet here)
– There were a significant number of RTs
– Coca-Cola responded less than 3 hours later with the tweet above.
Currently Pepsi have not replied or followed back… but we’re watching 🙂
The Original Experiment/Post:
Oh we all know Coke and Pepsi are age old bitter rivals but this is a new age of SOCIAL and we want to see something change between these arch enemies – even if it is just courtesy. Currently they are both on Twitter but at time of writing neither follows the other (http://www.doesfollow.com/cocacola/pepsi) or (http://www.doesfollow.com/pepsi/cocacola).
Join the fun: Let Coke and Pepsi know what you want: ReTweet this now!
Coke and Pespi Twitter accounts… why not end the cola wars and follow each other?
It would be like a public hug. (…Then you can go back to being rivals). So who’s first?
Well we want to see it happen… we’ll be watching…!
C’mon show us you have a sense of humour and do the follow!
Oh… The Re-tweets will keep coming at you until you do 🙂

Nice idea, Love it. My money is on Pepsi.
I was wrong. In the words of Clay Davis ‘Sheeeeeeeeeeeet’
Ahh Julian – I think maybe the Pepsi guys were in bed – it was pretty late over there. I’m sure they’ll come back and do the right thing in the am!
hmm… if the “brand first” is two competitive brands saying hello/acknowledging each other, I believe others such as Yahoo and Microsoft have already done this?
Forget about Pepsi vs. Coca-Cola. This one’s even better! – http://twitter.com/google/status/1255992316 🙂
It’s actually on my favorites. 🙂
And now pepsi has followed coke back 🙂
Nice idea, i love…

If the person responsible for this post was connected to TRUTH . . . the person would soon discover that COKE and PEPSI are OWNED BY THE SAME PEOPLE! Have you ever heard of the Rockefellers? This is one of the (elite world-controlling families) who would rather you DON’T KNOW what they have been up to decades . . . along with some other key family names to which MORE ENLIGHTENMENT would possibly make your eyebrows pop off your foreheads!! Do ya want to know some more TRUTH?
Great experiment. The impact of e-social.

~sigh~
I’m so sick of brands jumping on every social network in an attempt to be ‘relevant’, ‘viral’, or whatever the word du jour happens to be at the time.
Anyone on Twitter who’s a ‘brand advocate’, ‘SEO guru’, or anything else marketing-driven gets unfollowed or blocked immediately.
This Cola War continues long after the Cold War ceased. And oh, the money spent on advertising to perpetuate it eclipses that of those spent for some real wars! Makes me wonder how much these sodas are really worth…
@Adrian – great find.
Would have been nice if Google had followed them both too…

(They did follow Yahoo)
@crystalsinger
We talk about the brands we use and love/hate on twitter – Why shouldn’t they be able to talk back?
@Kyle:
Because on Twitter, we’re having a conversation amongst friends (or at least ‘tribe’ members).
Brands aren’t you’re friend, they’re not part of your tribe, they’re not interested in having a conversation – they’re interested in selling you stuff.
On email we call it SPAM. Brands want to re-brand (hah!) it on Twitter as ‘viral marketing’ or ‘creating brand personality’. That’s not what I want to see Twitter become.
Haha that’s great 😛
Everyone should take the hint and make friends with their soda rivals!

[…] Yes, even hardcore rivals can be social-media friends (or followers, at least). Earlier today Amnesia Razorfish launched an experiment to see if it could get the cola brands to follow each other on Twitter. It tweeted the original challenge and then documented the results and the full story of how it all went down on its blog. […]
I think its great when a company or organization is unafraid of their competition. It shows they are confident in their product and brand!

“All within 18 hours” – this is telling, as 18 hours in the twitterverse is the equivalent of about a month in real time. I wonder how may executives sat down at how many meetings to craft their (way less than 140 character!) response. A single copy editor could crank out an entire magalog in 18 hours!

[…] Pepsi and Coke did it on Twitter. Southwest Airlines and Jet Blue did at a Tweetup over a game of Guitar Hero. So what’s keeping you from friending your competition on social networks? Personally, I think that it is not only iokay to friend your competitor but it is how businesses should be interacting in this age of engagement — giving new meaning to phrase “friendly competition.” […]

Well, Hello from a Coke lover 😛
And for coke lovers like me out there, here’s an article about coke that i would like to share which i found is interesting:
http://peopalove.com/brandtalk/2010/oct/brand-chat.html
There is noticeably a bundle to learn about this. I assume you made sure good points in features also.
Many thanks for the impressive details listed throughout your website, what follows is a trivial quiz for your web site viewers. Exactly who proclaimed the following quotation? . . . .I have no other view than to promote the public good, and am unambitious of honors not founded in the approbation of my Country.
